Abstract
Many middle school teachers face unique challenges as they try to make both academic language and content
accessible to English language learners (ELL) in the physical education classroom. Physical education is
required of all middle school students and teaches about the importance of health and how to stay physically
active for life. It also offers a unique and supportive environment for ELL students to improve their English
fluency, build friendships and boost their self-esteem. The purpose of this paper is to describe several strategies
for improving ELL students’ understanding of content and expectations in the physical education classroom.
These strategies hope to help teachers meet the unique needs of middle school ELLs through the use of culturally
relevant pedagogies.
