Abstract
The subject matter of this paper is examination of the status of the areas that were disputed by Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia during the nineteenth and twenty century. This study discusses Britain’s role as protector of trade routes to and from India and how that role was limited to coastal areas in the Arabian Gulf with a relative lack of interest in inland areas. Of particular note is Great Britain’s focus on the Gulf coast (Khor al-Udaid) and its relative lack of interest in inland areas (Al-Ain/Buraimioasis region), with both locations serving as examples of the contrasting British actions in coastal and inland areas.
